JAMES NACHTWEY
Aside from his obvious skill, Jim's dedication to covering war and war-related events is remarkable. His continuity throughout the years has resulted in an amazing historical record. His recent book, Inferno, stands out as an example, and that covers only his work in the Nineties. It's not only an amazing breadth of work, but you see the depth in his photographs. He's spent so much time in these places where quite often there was very little media attention. He went on his own to document those stories. Especially nowadays it's difficult to get funding and support to cover these stories. There are few people who work on their own and manage to get their work published. Jim is one of the few people that can achieve that because he's so good as a photographer. He's an example of what I hope to achieve as a photographer. I hope in some small way to follow in his footsteps.
