SEBASTIÃO SALGADO
photographed by Pierre-Olivier Deschamps, 1997
Sebastião Salgado is an inspiration to us all in his missionary zeal. He goes after deeper themes - Wagnerian virtually. And he's a terrific artist; very painterly. When he succeeds, he transcends. There's nobody in the whole history of photography who has been able to deal with masses and space like he has. He's a great man, a great humanitarian. Because of his commitment to the subject matter, and to a sense of keeping a journal of the impact of history, he sometimes doesn't edit his pictures as carefully as he could - for fear that he would leave out some piece of essential information. He's very beholden to the journalistic fact. That's more important to him than his visualistic sense.
