Karbala, Iraq: Seen through a night vision scope like those
worn by soldiers, 1st Platoon, 1-37, 1st A.D. conduct a raid on
a hotel less than 200 meters from the Shrine of Abbas, one of Shiite
Islam’s holiest sites.
Every door of the building was kicked in, a favorite assignment for
infantrymen. The raid turned out no weapons, and there were no guests
inside the rooms; heavy fighting had apparently done little for tourism
and normally popular pilgrimages.
This was the last offensive raid carried out in the operation
by US soldiers, and the operations that followed were rebuilding projects
and weapons buy-back programs. |
