On the Road Again
nown as the avenue of giants, the approach to the royal city of Angkor Thom crosses the moat along the South Causeway and passes these guardians. 54 stone figures stand in succession on either side, demons on the right gods on the left. Each holds up a part of a giant naga, the serpent, which is used in the Cambodian creation myth to churn the universe from the cosmic ocean.
