PDN Photo Annual 2010

Patrick Amsellem Patrick Amsellem is the associate curator of photography at the Brooklyn Museum. He was formerly a curator at the Rooseum Center for Contemporary Art in Malmö, Sweden, where he organized the first Swedish exhibition of the work of Andreas Gursky. He has written extensively about art for newspapers and magazines. Dr. Amsellem has taught at New York University and is the author of several exhibition catalogues.

Alexa Becker Alexa Becker is the acquisitions editor for photography and art books at Kehrer Verlag, a publishing company in Heidelberg, Germany. Becker started her career at Kehrer in 2003, and she is now responsible for selecting and acquiring new photography-related projects. She holds a Master’s Degree in art history from the University of Heidelberg.

Mauro Bedoni Mauro Bedoni is the photo editor of Colors Magazine, a position he’s held since 2007. Previously, he worked as a photojournalist for various Italian photo agencies. His black & white work—created at the Zmaj orphanage in Beograd, Serbia—was shown in France and Italy. As a photographer for Fabrica, Benetton's communication research center, he shot and edited a series of photo campaigns on the Veneto region of Italy.

Michelle Bogre Michelle Bogre is a photographer, writer and lawyer specializing in copyright and media law. She is the former Chair of the Photography Department at Parsons The New School for Design and is currently an associate professor. Bogre helped to select the winners for this year’s Marty Forscher Fellowship.

David J. Carol David J. Carol is the author of the award winning photography book 40 Miles of Bad Road… His latest book, ALL MY LIES ARE TRUE…, was released in November 2009 by Kabloona Press. During his many years in the photo industry, Carol has been an editor, gallery owner, book publisher and lecturer, and he is currently the director of photography at CBS Outdoor. His books and photographs are in the permanent collections of museums and libraries throughout the U.S. (DavidCarol.com)

Joe Chanin Joe Chanin spends most of his free time collecting rocks and taking photographs with his two daughters, Darcy and Louissa. His photographs are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Leila Courey Leila Courey is an art buyer at Leo Burnett and has also worked as an art buyer at Y&R. Her proficiency at interpreting creative direction, her passion and her unique insights have helped broaden the recognition of local and international photographers. She’s produced global campaigns for BlackBerry and national campaigns for Procter & Gamble, Visa and Kellogg’s. Courey is on the advisory committee for Sheridan College’s applied photography program.

Catherine Dean Catherine Dean is an independent curator and photo editor based in Toronto, Canada. She is currently acting photo editor at Toronto Life magazine.

Tracy Doyle Tracy Doyle works for the New York-based advertising agency Baron & Baron. She was formerly at Interview magazine, and she also worked at the studios of acclaimed photographers Steven Klein and Annie Leibovitz. Doyle is a faculty member at both Parsons: The New School for Design, and the School of Visual Arts.

Sandy Boss Febbo Sandy Boss Febbo is executive art producer at Carmichael Lynch, where she has produced for clients including Subaru and Harley-Davidson over the past 13 years. She still loves it—every project provides an opportunity for collaboration with stellar talent to produce amazing work. Sandy’s background also includes time with the Minnesota State Arts Board, and she has volunteered as a docent at the Walker Art Center for over 15 years.

Benedict J. Fernandez Benedict J. Fernandez has been involved in photography for over 50 years, as a photographer, mentor, and educator. He help build the Photography Department at The New School’s Parsons School of Design where he served as the department’s chairman until 1992. Among others he has been awarded The Guggenheim Grant, and National Endowment for the Arts Award. Today Ben Fernandez is busy with his exhibitions and lecture engagements world wide. He is currently editing his vast archives for a major retrospective series of exhibitions. Fernandez helped to select this years Marty Forscher Fellowship.

Jessica Foster Jessica Foster is the photo editor for Major League Baseball Photos. Previously, she worked at Golf Digest and Golf World magazines, where she was responsible for overseeing feature and portrait photography. She has also worked as a photo editor for the United States Golf Association. She lives and works in New York.

Howard Greenberg Howard Greenberg is a former photographer and the founder of the Center for Photography, which he began in 1977 in Woodstock, New York. The Howard Greenberg Gallery, founded in 1981, was the first gallery to consistently exhibit photojournalism and “street photography,” which are now accepted as important components of photographic art.

Andy Grundberg Andy Grundberg, associate dean of undergraduate studies and chair of photography at the Corcoran College of Art and Design, is a critic, curator, teacher and arts consultant who has been involved with photography and art since the 1970s. Grundberg is the former director of the Friends of Photography in San Francisco, where he founded the quarterly journal see. He has organized major exhibitions, including ìAnsel Adams: A Legacy,î 1997, and ìIn Response to Place: Photographs from The Nature Conservancyís Last Great Places,î 2001.

Ed Han Ed Han is the executive creative director at the advertising agency Walton/Isaacson. His 20 years in the business have led him to realize that the people you work with and the quality of those relationships are more important than any award. To put beauty back into the world one image at a time, to help communicate the joys of life and to collaborate with wonderful people are his true passions.

Kourtney Hoffman Kourtney Hoffman is the art buyer at Young & Rubicam Chicago. Her passion for photography started at an early age when, unbeknownst to her parents, she subscribed to multiple magazines. Upon completing an MA at the School of Visual Communication at Ohio University, she moved to Chicago to pursue her professional career. She has served as a volunteer photo coach and project leader for PICTURE THIS Projects, a group aimed at bridging the gap between people of different backgrounds.

Susan Jones Susan Jones is the sales and operations manager for age fotostock America, Inc., a position she’s held for eight years. She has been working in the stock photo industry since 1982. Jones has worked as a photo researcher, editor, freelance photographer and custom photo printer, and is an active member of ASPP and PACA.

Peter B. Kaplan Peter B. Kaplan has been a photographer for more than 30 years, and his photographs have appeared in countless publications. Kaplan documented the Statue of Libertyís historic restoration beginning in 1982, and currently has the most extensive story on the statue. Kaplan helped to judge this yearís Marty Forscher Fellowship.

Dennis Keeley Dennis Keeley has worked as an artist, photographer, teacher and writer for more than 25 years. He is currently the chair of the photography and imaging program at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.

Michael Komanecky Michael Komanecky, a graduate of the Museum Management Institute, has served on several panels for the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Arizona Arts Council and has been a reviewer for the Museum Assessment Program of the NEA. He is the chief curator at the Farnsworth Art Museum and lives in Rockland, Maine.

Alvaro Matías Alvaro MatÍas is the communications director for La Fábrica, a contemporary arts center in Madrid. Matías joined La Fábrica in September 2000 and the same year joined the team for PhotoEspaña, an international festival of photography and visual arts. In 2002, he was appointed general coordinator of the festival, a position he held for two years.

Daniel Moorey Daniel Moorey has worked as an art buyer at AMV BBDO—the largest advertising agency in the U.K.—for the past ten years. For the last four years, he has held the position of head of art buying at DDB London. He has been involved in award-winning work for Harvey Nichols, Guinness, Sainsbury’s, The Economist, Heal’s, Dulux, the BBC and Volkswagen.

Eugene Mopsik Eugene Mopsik has a distinguished history working as a tireless advocate for photographers. Mopsik currently serves as the executive director of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) where since 2003 he has overseen the society’s largest membership growth, as well as the expansion of its industry influence and legislative impact. Mopsik helped to judge The Arnold Newman Prize for New Directions in Photographic Portraiture.

Ute Noll Ute Noll is a curator, writer, lecturer and picture editor. Noll’s photography project agency, OnPhotoraphy.com, and her art space, Uno Art Space, are based in Stuttgart, Germany. Each month, she selects an emerging photographer to feature in the German photography magazine Photographie. Noll also works as a freelance photo director for commercial photo shoots and teaches at several German universities.

Darrell Perry Darrell Perry is the former director of photography for the Wall Street Journal, where he led a staff providing wire, creative and assignment photography for all editions globally and online. During his career, Perry has relaunched several magazines, including Psychology Today, Mother Earth News and Spy. He has also worked at the stock photography agencies FPG, LGI, Index Stock and Image Direct as well as at CBS where he assigned photo shoots to promote over a dozen hit shows, including The Late Show with David Letterman.

Miriam Romais Miriam Romais is the executive director of En Foco Inc. and editor of Nueva Luz photographic journal. She is also a curator, award-winning photographer, and has served on many panels and participated in photography reviews, including FotoFest, PhotoLucida, Center and NY Foundation for the Arts.

Fay Torresyap Fay Torresyap is a photo editor with more than 25 years of experience. In 2008, she founded Bluedot Projects, a picture-editing and research company. Torresyap has worked on a wide range of projects, including the books Janson, History of Art and Aphrodite, by Isabel Allende, and the motion picture Barbershop 2. She also contributed to the creation of photographic murals for 20th Century Fox studios in Los Angeles. She has been the New York representative for the French edition of GEO magazine for over 20 years.

Laura Valenti Laura Valenti is the program director for the Newspace Center for Photography, a nonprofit school, community darkroom, studio, digital lab and gallery in Portland, Oregon. Valenti curates for Newspace and has worked on juries for photography competitions and exhibitions such as Photolucida’s Critical Mass and Center’s Choice Awards, and she will be a reviewer at Review Santa Fe. Her own work is in the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Photography.

Ricardo Viera Ricardo Viera is the director and curator for the Lehigh University Art Galleries and Museum Operation in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Viera has been a reviewer and consultant for Fotofest since the early Nineties and has acted as curator and contributed to several important exhibitions, including “Hector Mendez Caratini: The Eye of Memory,” El Museo del Barrio, NYC, 2006, and “Our Journey Our Stories,” Smithsonian Center for Latino Initiatives, 2006.

Zana Woods Zana Woods is the senior photo editor of Wired magazine. She was previously an art buyer at Foote, Cone & Belding, and her accounts included AT&T, MTV and Dockers. Her work has been recognized by the Society of Publication Designers and Photo District News. Zana frequently talks with students at the Academy of Art University and California College of the Arts (both in San Francisco) about photography.
