Along with all the images, you can see all the winning artists discuss what inspired them to create their winning image and then how it was realized, while our Web site winners talk about what aspect of their site they feel works best in captivating the viewer.
In some cases that the digital element in these images is extremely subtle, perhaps some retouching here or some compositing there, while in other images the digital aspect of the photograph is glaringly obvious. That is the beauty of the contest: it represents the full range of how digital technology is being used by today's professionals and applied to their photography. What is especially noticeable this year is how professionals are increasingly using digital cameras for capture, signifying the much improved and, more significantly, the affordable new technology available on the market. Compare this to our earlier Annual Digital Imaging contests where the digital element was almost all in the postproduction. We have clearly come a long way since the early 1990s when one wag suggested that digital technology was turning "good photographers into bad surrealists." Now it is apparent that digital is turning good photographers into even better ones.
The Annual Digital Imaging contest covers all aspects of the digital workflow: capture, scanning, manipulation and output. A winning image can incorporate all these elements or just one. Our distinguished panel of judges rated each image on a scale of five and then the points were tallied up. The first-place winners in each of the categories will receive the following prizes from our generous sponsors:
> Epson Stylus Photo Printer
> Adobe Photoshop
> Nikon Coolpix 5400 Digital Camera

Thanks again to our generous sponsors: Nikon, Adobe and Epson, our judges and of course all the artists out there who submitted their entries for our contest.
