Not content to rely on the winds of fate or the kindness of good fortune, Eric Meola has created much of his own commercial success. Early in his career he sunk a small fortune into putting his name in front of potential clients. He describes the success of his first major self-promotion campaign:

"I spent twenty-five to thirty thousand dollars of my own money, which in those days was equivalent of fifty or sixty thousand dollars today, on a promotion piece. It was a very unique, very exotically printed promotion piece; I sent it out to about 2000 people. If you get ten good responses, one percent, you're lucky. I got about two percent and the two percent were magnificent. I mean, I got amazing work out of that. That booklet was what made my career in terms of advertising. It changed overnight."
