Looking for an eye-catching way to photograph natural-medicine
guru Dr. Andrew Weil, McNally proposed that "the way to make
the connection " between the man and the medicine that he endorses
was to cover him in earth. He also just thought it would be an
attention getting shot. It got so much attention, says the photographer,
that the doctor has said in subsequent interviews that he almost wishes he
hadn't done it.
"He is a Harvard-educated MD, and I think some people could construe
that photograph as him being less than serious -- but he is quite
serious," says McNally.
