| Although only 10 years old when Glenn went into space for the
first time in his Mercury space craft, interestingly, McNally
used visual memories of that coverage as inspiration for his own
shooting.
"There were numerous instances where I just kind of got this reverberation
where I recalled the original coverage of the Mercury days," he
says. "and consciously or unconsciously I had that in mind in
trying to develop the coverage now in a way that could be analogous
to that coverage. I also used that coverage as a lever to try
to pry the doors open a little bit. They would say, 'Well, you
can't do that because there is no precedent for doing that' and
I would say, 'Well, there is a precedent. If you look here in
1962 you did do this'." |
