Parks's career in fashion began one afternoon in St. Paul, Minnesota, when he convinced the wife of the owner of Frank Murphy's, the city's most stylish store, that he could photograph fashion. He had no examples to back up his claim, but when asked why he thought he was up to the task, he replied, "Because I know I can. That's all." He later went on to photograph haute couture in Europe for Vogue.
