After his return from Paris, Parks was assigned by LIFE to cover the Ingrid Bergman-Roberto Rossellini affair burgeoning on the island of Stromboli, off of Sicily. The two lovers had become the center of a huge controversy swirling around them: Bergman had left her daughter and husband for Rossellini, and now the couple was on location shooting a film. Everyone wanted to get pictures of them together. "Ingrid and Roberto felt like the whole world was against them," Parks explains, "but Ingrid was sane enough to realize that they had to have a professional down there to take photos of them making the picture. She had seen a story of mine in LIFE, so she asked me to come to the island. Perhaps she thought I would do the story with more discretion."

Eventually, Parks and Bergman grew quite close, a trust that is evident in many of the images the photographer took during his time on the island. "During Ingrid's free time we roamed Stromboli by foot, shooting pictures of her for the coverage. She was gracious and kind and easy to work with. Before long a sense of trust grew between us, one I honored."
