In 1949/'50 Parks went on assignment for LIFE, to Estoril, Portugal, which he described as "beautiful, constantly sunny and steeped in the mannerisms of a tropical resort." In between photographing deposed monarchs living in "luxurious exile," Parks also uncovered poverty and despair, as etched in the face of the beggar woman shown here. Wrote Parks in Half Past Autumn: "Here, strangely wed to the good life, are the poor. Hungered, living close to darkness, they too can be seen at lavish outdoor celebrations where the rich gather. But they are there with their palms lifted upward, begging for daily bread." |
